Background of the Study
Type 2 diabetes is a growing health concern, particularly among the elderly, due to its association with age, sedentary lifestyles, and poor dietary habits (Umar et al., 2024). In Katsina State, the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes among the elderly is rising, and the condition poses significant health risks such as heart disease, kidney failure, and vision loss (Salihu & Ibrahim, 2023). Lifestyle modification programs, which include changes in diet, physical activity, and weight management, have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of Type 2 diabetes, especially in high-risk populations such as the elderly (Usman & Isah, 2023).
These programs emphasize sustainable lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, healthy eating, and weight control, which can help maintain healthy blood sugar levels and prevent the development of diabetes (Alhassan et al., 2024). However, the implementation and effectiveness of lifestyle modification programs specifically targeting the elderly population in Katsina State have not been thoroughly examined. This study aims to evaluate the impact of lifestyle modification programs on the prevention of Type 2 diabetes in elderly individuals in Katsina State.
Statement of the Problem
Type 2 diabetes is prevalent among the elderly population in Katsina State, and its prevention is a critical health priority. While lifestyle modification is a proven strategy for preventing diabetes, there is limited research on its application and effectiveness among elderly individuals in the region. This study will explore how lifestyle modification programs can reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in elderly people in Katsina State.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of lifestyle modification programs in preventing Type 2 diabetes among elderly individuals in Katsina State.
To identify the key components of lifestyle modification programs that contribute to diabetes prevention.
To examine the challenges and barriers to implementing lifestyle modification programs for the elderly in Katsina State.
Research Questions
How effective are lifestyle modification programs in preventing Type 2 diabetes in elderly individuals in Katsina State?
What are the key components of lifestyle modification programs that help prevent Type 2 diabetes in the elderly?
What barriers prevent the successful implementation of lifestyle modification programs in Katsina State?
Research Hypotheses
Lifestyle modification programs significantly reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes among elderly individuals in Katsina State.
Elderly individuals who participate in lifestyle modification programs exhibit improved blood sugar levels and overall health compared to those who do not.
Barriers such as lack of awareness, limited resources, and cultural attitudes hinder the success of lifestyle modification programs in Katsina State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on elderly individuals aged 60 years and above in Katsina State, evaluating the effectiveness of lifestyle modification programs in preventing Type 2 diabetes. Limitations may include challenges in ensuring full participation in the programs and variability in the commitment to lifestyle changes among participants.
